For the past several months, AbleVoices has been working on a major technology and infrastructure project behind the scenes- one that is already transforming how our photographers learn, create, organize, and share their work. None of this would have been possible without the incredible generosity, expertise, and commitment of Jeremy Beeman, a volunteer through Hands On Nashville’s Geek Cause program.

When Jeremy first began volunteering with us, we knew this project would be significant. We needed a system that could handle large file uploads and workflows that could support the growth of our photography programs, our studio assistants, and the increasing number of photographers using our computers and equipment. Over time, the project continued to evolve as we realized more robust systems and infrastructure were needed to truly make everything work well together.

Jeremy has spent well over 100 hours helping design and implement a system that includes hardwired iMac workstations, a network-attached storage (NAS) system for organized file management and backup, managed devices through Mosyle, streamlined workflows for photographers and studio assistants, accessibility-focused computer setups, shared folders, automation systems, and infrastructure that allows our photographers to work more independently and efficiently.

This work was also made possible through the ongoing support of Forest Hills United Methodist Church. For several years, Forest Hills has generously provided AbleVoices with discounted rent and a welcoming home for our programs, volunteers, studio assistants, and photographers. As our needs grew, they supported our expansion from two rooms to four rooms, worked with us to increase internet speeds, purchased network switches, and provided the cabling needed to create a dedicated AbleVoices network. Their partnership has given us the space and infrastructure needed to continue growing and serving our community.

Much of this project work happens quietly behind the scenes, but the impact is very visible in our studio. Our photographers now have computers that work consistently, easier access to their photos and shared folders, simplified workflows, and systems that help them focus more on photography and creativity rather than technology frustrations. Jeremy has thoughtfully considered how to create systems that are both efficient and accessible for the people we serve. What I appreciate most is that he continued helping us problem-solve as new needs and challenges arose throughout the process. His work is helping create opportunities for our photographers not only today, but for years to come.

As founder and executive director of AbleVoices, one of the greatest gifts of this work is the people I get to meet along the way. Of course, working alongside our photographers with disabilities every day is one of the most meaningful parts of what I do, but I am also continually reminded that there are people in the world who are deeply generous, thoughtful, and willing to use their talents to help others in meaningful ways. And Jeremy is certainly one of those people.

I am incredibly thankful for Jeremy, for the time, knowledge, and care he has invested into AbleVoices, and for people like him and organizations like Forest Hills UMC who understand the importance of creating inclusive spaces where everyone has the opportunity to participate, create, and be valued.

I encourage others to consider volunteering through Hands On Nashville and sharing their time or skills with organizations in our community- the impact can be far greater than you may realize.
