Photography for Self-Expression
In-Person

AbleVoices’ Photography for Self-Expression (PSE) is our foundational program that teaches youth and adults with disabilities a unique way to share about themselves with the world. The PSE curriculum is based on the photovoice method, which provides cameras to underrepresented individuals to help them tell their stories visually. We lead AbleVoices PSE projects to promote communication, empowerment, and disability advocacy. Participants learn how to use a digital camera and effective composition techniques to share their thoughts and experiences through their photographs. Participants create photographs that represent their interests, strengths, and the people, places, and things that are most important to them in a gallery exhibit at the conclusion of the project. This experience amplifies the participants’ voices and illustrates the power of self-expression. Photography is an impactful way to promote learning, build confidence, spark creativity, develop social skills, encourage dialogue, and promote advocacy for people with disabilities. The community outings and gallery exhibits also serve to inform the public about the photographers to help foster more accepting and inclusive communities.

AbleVoices also develops PSE projects for young adults transitioning from school to adulthood because it is such a critical time in their lives, when important changes occur. For many of these students, communication is one of their biggest challenges. Images can show in an instant what words or text take much longer to express. In other words, we see it as a beneficial way for the photographers to practice speaking up for their needs, sharing their preferences and interests, and making decisions about their future. Research tells us the more opportunities students have to discuss their interests and preferences, explain their goals, and actively plan for their future, the more control they will have over their own lives.

AbleVoices leads PSE projects in schools and community organizations. We also offer this program to individuals in a virtual format. To learn more about the Photography for Self-Expression program, email info@ablevoices.org.
